Precision in Language

Dear Friend

There is a world of difference between using some word and using the word.  The beauty of language arises from the precise use of words.  The greatest challenge of a wannabe writer is to develop the skill of word selection.  Shall we taste a sample?

They were laughing on their way back from a spin in the car.

A leaden Friday dawned, tinged with the glare from the fire.

Flattened and diminished by age, she seemed like a bit of crumpled paper blown about by the wind.

A recent book called Word Lover’s Delight (Citadel Press, 2009) has a fascinating selection of precise words: cicerone means a ‘tourist guide’; pensile means dangling loosely; mephitis means a disgusting smell; and, slugabed means a person who is reluctant to get out of his bed because of laziness.

It is such words that lend language life.  The tip is not to be pedantic but to be sure in writing.

More later. Take care.

Masters

Have you heard of Masters whom we seldom acknowledge?

For example, Water – the Master who teaches us to spread purity wherever you go?  Or, what else does your mother mean when she asks you to clean a plate?  She wants you to give the impurity of the plate to water and bring back the plate with the purity of Water!  Namaste, Water Sir!!

For example, Earth – the unacknowledged Master on whom everyone treads and no one thanks.  Imagine how patient He is!  Dalai Lama treads on him and so do robbers and gentlemen who are worse than robbers.  But Earth does not complain and teaches us the lesson of Patience.  Namaste, Earth Sir !!

For example, the common Crow.  Have you ever seen him lounging?  He is always alert and it is rightly said that Wisdom comes only to the Alert.  Learn to be Alert from the Crow.  Namaste, Crow Sir !!

There are many more such masters.  More about them later.  Till then Bye.  Take care.
